AN ex-racing greyhound is set to spend his 365th day in an Essex dog rehoming shelter.

In just a few weeks retired racing greyhound Jerry is set to hit his 12th month waiting to find his forever home.

The friendly dog will mark his 365th day in Clarks Farm Greyhound Rehoming Centre in Little Totham on February 22.

Staff say the "handsome lad" has watched many of his fellow greyhounds come and go without ever having any applications of interest.

A spokesman for the rehoming centre said: "This handsome lad loves everyone he meets without question.

"Everyone that meets him says how relaxed, quiet, good on the lead and affectionate he is."

Jerry has a small frame and stands not much taller than many of the female greyhounds in the centre.

He is also not a fussy eater and finishes anything placed in front of him - his rescuers even say sometimes "a little too quickly".

They added Jerry is "excellent" with all the other greyhounds and will cuddle whoever he shares his kennel with.

The spokesman adds: "But this brings us to the inevitable question of why such a perfect greyhound is still here after all this time?

"The simple answer is he struggles with other breeds, that’s all.

"He gets insecure and overwhelmed in seeing other dogs as he doesn’t understand what they are, how he is supposed to respond or how to talk to them.

"So he can be reactive and strong on the lead where he doesn't understand what he's supposed to do.

"He may take a little bit longer to get the hang of it then some of the other greyhounds but as we have seen happen over and over again, once he is out of the kennels and in a loving home, with some guidance and bribery, he will learn and go onto be such an amazing companion."

Clarks Farm Greyhound Rehoming Centre hopes to find Jerry a forever home before his 365th day in the shelter on February 22.
