ELECTRIC vehicles being used by riders with no helmets and “without consideration” for pedestrians and road users have been seized by police officers.

Officers from the Harwich Community Policing Team became aware of endangering motorists using a Sur Ron electric bike and an electric scooter on Monday.

Sur Ron bikes are not road legal and have a top speed of 45mph, while electric scooters are also not permitted for use on any public land.

After speaking with those involved, and explaining to them why what they were doing was illegal, officers confiscated the two vehicles.

A spokesman for Essex Police Tendring said: “They were being ridden by riders with no helmets and without consideration for pedestrians and road users.

“We would like to remind everyone that unless hired through a Government licenced company electric scooters should not be used.

“They travel significantly faster than a mobility scooter and cause great concern to pedestrians.

“We continue to receive reports of electric bikes and scooters causing anti-social behaviour including concerns of safety in Dovercourt, Parkeston and Harwich.

“We will continue to take appropriate and proportionate action against anyone found to be driving or riding in an anti-social manner.”
