FISH and chips can we be one of those meals where you either have a great experience or it is a bit underwhelming.

In Colchester we have plenty of choice when it comes to the British staple.

And we are lucky enough to have a number of takeaways which are in the running for the coveted 2024 National Fish & Chips Awards.

One of those is Johnny Mac’s, in Greenstead, which is going up against other Essex restaurants in its bid to be named the best.

On a cold Saturday evening, I decided to test out the takeaway.

Johnny Mac’s has its own website where you can place your order for either collection or delivery.

The site also makes clear what is in stock and what is sold old. The menu is extensive with numerous options for fish fans, meat eaters and vegetarians.

The takeaway offers traditional battered cod, haddock and plaice as well as the option to have it grilled.

All the fish dishes can also be made with gluten free batter.

Other options include scampi and calamari as well as fish cakes and even spam fritters.

Beyond that there are a range of burgers and pies for this not after traditional fish and chips.

Vegetarians are also well catered with four different options.

Johnny Mac’s offers a budget cod and chips for £6.60 which is for kids or those with a small appetite.

Despite knowing this may be the best option I let my stomach rule my head and decided on the medium cod and chips.

I also picked up a mushy peas and curry sauce.

My sister went for the battered halloumi and chips.

We opted for delivery for an additional £2.

We were told the food would arrive in 45 mins time and almost on the dot the doorbell rang.

First impressions were good with very generous portions.

Mine had a decent sized piece of fish and ample chips, which in the end proved to be too much for me.

The fish was perfectly battered and flaky.

The halloumi portion was huge with three battered pieces alongside chips.

The mushy peas and curry sauce were as expected and complemented the meal.

All in all, we were very impressed with the food, portion sizes and bargain delivery.

Johhny Mac’s is well worth a look if you are in the market for a new local chippy.

We will certainly be eating from there again.
