A FRUSTRATED motorcyclist has hit out after he claims designated parking bays in the city centre are being taken up by e-scooters and bikes.

The motorist, from Colchester, says he regularly uses the motorcycle parking spaces in the High Street adjacent to Metro Bank.

However, says he often comes to park in the assigned motorcycle space, “one or more” of the Tier e-scooters are either “on their sides or standing in the motorcycle parking space”.

He said: “I am absolutely sick and tired of having to get off my motorcycle and move these scooters out of the way.

“These scooters are dangerous, get in the way, have no assigned spaces of their own, and are like litter on the streets.

“On one occasion I had to get off my motorcycle in the street to move these scooters out of motorcycle parking and held up a bus.

“Can they either ban them altogether or at the very least, assign proper parking places for Tier e-scooters and e-bikes, where users have to leave them, instead of causing a nuisance and getting in the way.”

Colchester Council said it takes the concerns “seriously” and assures residents it is “committed to ensuring a safe and sustainable transport network for all users, including motorcyclists”.

A spokesman said: “We’re working with Tier to address e-scooters parked in motorcycle bays on the High Street.

“This may involve improved geofencing in the Tier app to restrict parking in these areas.

“We recognise e-scooters and bikes can provide a convenient and environmentally friendly transport option for short journeys.

“However, their safe and responsible use is paramount.”

The spokesman continued: “In response to concerns about safety and responsible usage, Tier offers regular e-bike and e-scooter training sessions with BikeWorks to promote safe riding and has developed videos with Sight Loss Councils to raise awareness about parking and its impact on visually impaired individuals.

“We encourage all residents to report any instances of e-bikes or e-scooters being parked inappropriately.

“Tier has dedicated channels for reporting unsafe riding and works closely with the police to address any issues.

“Feedback is vital in helping to address any ongoing issues.

“We will continue to work with Tier and Essex County Council to promote responsible usage and parking among e-bike and e-scooter riders.”

Tier was contacted for comment.
