Albion could be among the “winners” if a new Premier League spending cap is implemented.

A majority of Premier League clubs have given their backing to progressing with plans to examine a spending limit in the top flight.

It is understood clubs voted on Monday to progress to the final stages of a legal and economic analysis of anchoring – a principle which would potentially limit expenditure on things like player wages, plus agents’ fees and transfer amortisation costs, by capping them as a multiple of the central Premier League revenues going to the bottom club.

The intention of anchoring is to keep the league competitive by preventing the richest clubs dominating, with Manchester United and Manchester City understood to have voted against it.

Aston Villa are also reported to have voted against, with Chelsea reported to have abstained.

Football finance lecturer Kieran Maguire told Sky Sports: "It's a bit like having a credit card.

“Just because you've got the limit to spend a huge amount of money, it doesn't mean it's a good thing.

“The biggest winners potentially would be clubs like Brentford, Brighton and Bournemouth who have modest wage bills - they're probably paying on average £45,000 per week.

"They could double or treble that and still be within the rules. Clubs like that who have used the transfer market well, they could spend a lot more.”

Albion recently reported a record profit of £122.8 million for the 2022-23 season and it is unlikely they would suddenly became big spenders even if the rules permitted it.
