Train services across Essex are set to be disrupted for more than three hours after a train hit an obstruction on the line.
The incident occurred at Ilford, leaving some lines blocked, affecting routes between London Liverpool Street and several destinations across the region.
A spokesperson for Greater Anglia said: "Unfortunately, we have received reports of a train striking an object on the tracks in the Ilford area.
"To ensure the tracks are safe for the passage of trains, Network Rail engineers have taken a block of 2 of the lines in question to investigate.
"All services in the area will now run on the remaining 2 lines whilst a through investigation is carried out."
Network Rail engineers are attending as quickly as possible to carry out a detailed inspection.
The disruption is expected to continue until at least 1.45pm, with delays, cancellations, and revised services affecting passengers throughout the morning and early afternoon.
Affected routes include trains between London Liverpool Street and Braintree, Clacton on Sea, Colchester Town, and Southend Victoria.

Greater Anglia and Network Rail have apologised for the disruption and advised passengers to check for the latest travel updates before starting their journeys.
Advance ticket holders will be permitted to travel on earlier or later trains if their booked service is cancelled due to the incident.
Passengers delayed by 15 minutes or more may be entitled to compensation for part of their fare.
