A man has been sentenced after admitting stealing six bicycles in an Essex town.

Salami Usman, 50 of Markwell Wood, Harlow, was arrested following work by plain-clothed officers targeting bicycle theft across the town.

Essex Police said officers had been using information provided by local people to focus their efforts on locations where bikes had been reported stolen.

As part of the operation, officers identified and arrested the man, who was subsequently charged with six counts of theft of a pedal cycle.

He appeared at Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court on Monday, October 19, where he pleaded guilty to all six offences.

The man was sentenced to eight weeks in prison, suspended for 12 months.

Essex Police said bicycle theft can have a significant impact on victims, particularly those who rely on their bikes to travel to work, see friends or get around.

The force has encouraged people to continue reporting bicycle thefts and suspicious activity, saying information about where offences are happening helps officers target their work and identify those responsible.
