PLANS for a new traveller site in Chelmsford have been agreed.

The plans for the change of use of land east of Drakes Lane Industrial Estate, Drakes Lane, Little Waltham were given the go ahead by the council.

It is thought there could be up to eighteen caravans on the site with nine pitches and up to two caravans per pitch, according to a council report.

There were at least 200 comments from neighbouring residents about the plans for the site.

These were mixed with some in support and others slamming the proposals.

The council planning officer report said: “The application was considered by the Planning Committee on December 4 2018, where it was resolved that, subject to a unilateral undertaking being entered into to secure the provision of a commuted sum of £900.00, the Director of Sustainable Communities be authorised to grant the application subject to conditions.

“The unilateral undertaking has now been completed and the planning permission can be granted.”

A number of conditions were placed on the approval.

These included that no more than two caravans shall be stationed at each pitch at any one time.

Some of the businesses at the industrial estate include car workshops.
