SOUTHEND United manager Chris Powell threw his support behind recalled goalkeeper Mark Oxley following Saturday’s 1-0 defeat to AFC Wimbledon.

Oxley’s defensive mix-up with centre-back Michael Turner led to Dons striker Joe Pigott scoring the only goal of the game at Roots Hall.

And Powell, who opted to recall the fit-again goalkeeper for his 100th appearance for the Shrimpers, remains keen to help Oxley bounce back to form.

“I’ve made the decision and it led to a goal with a mistake but other than that he (Oxley) was fine and dealt with everything Wimbledon threw at us,” said Powell.

“He’s paid the price but we have to support him like I’ve just done in there.

“You’re angry and upset but you have to move on and you have to give him the support to move on and play his part in the team.”

Oxley had been out of action with a back injury since December but was handed an immediate recall between the sticks, despite not having played a match of any kind.

And that meant Nathan Bishop, who had started the previous 15 League games, dropped down onto the bench.

“It’s been great for Bish to come in but it’s been tough too with the goals we’ve been conceding,” said Powell.

“I’m not saying they’re down to him because he’s a young talent that has a bright future in the game but I decided to go with Mark.”

Bishop had conceded 16 goals in his previous six games before Saturday’s clash but Powell opted to go with experience against the Dons.

But the selection was not enough to stop the Shrimpers suffering a 1-0 defeat.

And Powell now feels confidence is an issue among his players.

“The players are really low and I understand that,” said Powell.

“We have eight games to go but we haven’t won for a few games and anything that could go against us does go against us.

“We lost two vital points at Blackpool and that ebbs away at the confidence but we have to keep believing we can get the points we need to stay up.”
